The American Association for Gifted Children (AAGC) is the nation's oldest advocacy organization for gifted children. It was established in the late 1940's. Over the course of its history, AAGC has published materials for the educational research community, for people in the medical profession, and for parents and teachers of gifted children.

Several years ago AAGC moved from New York to North Carolina, where it is now incorporated as a non-profit organization.

Currently, AAGC publishes a newsletter three times yearly; an occasional series called Working Papers, a publication which circulates information from the educational research community; and other materials. Financial support comes primarily from individual donors.

This knowledge has been a critical ingredient of the major advances of the twentieth century and is playing a dominant role in preparing for the next century. In its nearly 100 years of service to science and humanity, the APS has established itself as the major membership organization for physicists in the United States and a significant force in physics internationally. Over 40,000 scientists worldwide belong to the non-profit scientific and educational Society whose members include the physics leadership in academia, industry, and government laboratories. APS publishes the leading international physics journals, including Physical Review and Physical Review Letters, organizes major scientific meetings, and provides strong outreach programs in education and international and public affairs. Since the late 1980s, education reformers in the United States have sought ways to "restructure" schools to boost student performance. Has it worked? Have changes in school structure -- such as site-based management, interdisciplinary team teaching, flexible scheduling and assessment by portfolio -- actually boosted student achievement? What other conditions tend to make such organizational innovations successful?

From 1990 to 1995, the Center on Organization and Restructuring of Schools at the University of Wisconsin-Madison examined these questions. Center researchers analyzed data from more than 1,500 elementary, middle and high schools throughout the United States, and conducted field research in 44 schools in 16 states. The Center’s work was completed in August, 1996. The Center is closed, but information on its findings is provided here.

The NCSTL is headquartered at Ohio State University. Its main focus is on factors that effect science teaching and learning that are generally out of a classroom teachers' hands, such as social or cultural influences, public incentives and perceptions, political and economic forces, and the impact of new technologies. They are funded by a variety of sources including the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement, Ohio State University and the Ohio Board of Regents. The National Center for the Study of Writing and Literacy (NCSWL), one of the educational research centers sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, has completed its mission and no longer functions as an independent entity. Founded in 1985, the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) unites researchers from five of the nation's leading universities to improve elementary and secondary education through research on policy, finance, school reform, and school governance.

Believing that reform, in order to be effective, must lead to high-quality instruction and improved student learning, CPRE researchers focus on three essential components. Effective reform must: incorporate a coherent set of policies and practices; contain meaningful incentives to individuals and the organization; and build the capacity of the individual and the organization to institute and sustain necessary changes. CPRE researchers are currently examining how alternative approaches to reform -- such as new accountability policies, teacher compensation, whole-school reform approaches, and efforts to contract out instructional services -- address issues of coherence, incentives, and capacity.

CPRE products focus on how policies and practices contribute to effective reform. CPRE not only publishes research reports, but also sponsors forums and workshops on issues policymakers grapple with daily.

In 1979, Robert A. Rosenbaum, a professor of mathematics at Wesleyan University, convened a group of citizens who were concerned about the quality of mathematics education in CT. These meetings included mathematics teachers and faculty from the public school, community college, and university levels, school administrators, and representatives of business and industry. Their collaboration resulted in the formation of the Project to Increase Mastery of Mathematics (PIMM).

PIMMS (Project to Increase Mastery of Mathematics and Science) began in 1983 when the organization’s scope was broadened to include science. In the summer of 1984, the first of a continuing series of summer fellowship programs for teachers was conducted. These two-summer, multi-week institutes are designed to increase the content background of participants, to provide them with new teaching strategies, including the use of technology, and to develop their leadership capabilities so they can extend the impact of their PIMMS experience to their colleagues and educators statewide.

The Triangle Coalition is a Washington D.C. based nonprofit organization comprised of more than 100 members with representation from business, industry, and labor; scientific and engineering societies; state and local alliances; education organizations; and governmental agencies.

The Triangle Coalition has three unique features that distinguish it from other national organizations working to improve education: it involves organizations from business, industry, and labor as equal partners with those from science, engineering, and education; it provides direct linkages with a large number of broad-based alliances that are working to improve math, science, and technology education at the state and local level; and it has no vested interest in any one mechanism for education improvement.

The U.S. Metric Association (USMA), Inc., with headquarters in Northridge CA, is a national non-profit organization, founded in 1916. It advocates U.S. conversion to the International System of Units which is known by the abbreviation SI (ess-eye). SI is also called the modern metric system. The process of changing our system of measurement units to the metric system (i.e. SI) is called metric transition or metrication.
