Winter 2011

Winter is a good time to reflect on progress. It is not too late to make some of those instructional changes you carefully considered at the beginning of the school year. This Winter, many states have worked to incorporate the Common Core Mathematical Standards into their current state curriculum and assessment programs. I encourage you to pay careful attention to the Standards for Mathematical Practice. These Practices provide a rich opportunity, whether you are in a CCSS state or not, to carefully consider the teaching and learning cycle.

These Practices identify what mathematics classrooms should be, and how students should learn mathematics. I know school budgets are tight, but I encourage you to find opportunities to stay up-to-date about your state's progress. One excellent way is to attend the NCSM national meeting. Start making your plans.
