News from the Western 2 Region
Hope Bjerke, Western 2 Regional Director
Summer 2012

It was great to meet so many of you in Philadelphia at our Western 2 Regional Caucus. Thanks for attending and sharing your ideas and thoughts on how we can work together for a stronger organization. We had members from Washington, Oregon, California and Palau! These gals won the unofficial prize for traveling the greatest distance to attend NCSM in Philadelphia. They crossed the International Dateline and passed through 11 different time zones to reach us at our conference. Now that is dedication!

On Monday, we had a Regional Leaders Meeting and I am happy to announce we have several members who will serve on our leadership team for Western 2. Sandy Christie will represent Washington, Nancy Drickey and Patty Sandoz will represent Oregon, Gretchen Muller, Diane Kinch and Lisa Usher-Staats will represent California, Hadleen Medalarak will represent Palau, and Stacie Kalchi-Imar will represent Hawaii.

We have many exciting learning opportunities offered in Western 2 in the coming months. Please see all these events listed in the calendar below. I think the most anticipated event is the NCSM Leadership Academy being offered in our region for the first time ever. Leadership in Support of Positive Change is happening in Santa Rosa, CA, on July 31-August 2. If you are responsible for implementing new content and practice standards for teaching and learning with your teachers and helping them embrace the transition, then you need to attend this Academy.

Features of the Academy include:

  • 8 hours of daily plenary and grade level breakout sessions for elementary, middle, and high school
  • Rich and engaging content explicitly designed for mathematics education leaders
  • Practical suggestions and specific next steps for site work
  • Research-based strategies for getting results,
  • Materials, resources, and strategies to use in your setting
  • Networking with leaders from other states and countries
  • Continental breakfast and lunch each day of the academy
  • Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium presentations and updates of progress

The NCSM Leadership Academy will focus on implementation of the CCSS in your school, district, state, or region through the use of research-informed best practices in teaching and learning, as described by the eight CCSS for Mathematical Practice. You will develop ways to increase teachers' understanding and integration of the CCSS for Mathematical Content including domains, learning trajectories, grade-level and course sequencing, course design, scope, and sequence. The academy will emphasize formative assessment cycles for learning.

Registration is open now! The deadline is July 17, 2012. I hope to see you there. Have a great summer!
