In my nearly three decades as an educator, I have served in roles at all levels of teaching and learning, PreK-20, including adult continuing education and the Delaware Department of Education. Each role had its unique challenges and points of personal and professional growth for me, but the throughline for me is mathematical relevance, beauty, and joy.
As a Supervisor of Mathematics in the Colonial School District in New Castle, Delaware, I am committed to empowering leaders, learners, & problem-solvers within and beyond my school community. The “Power of WE” is strong in our district, and I make it my personal mission to ensure our families/caregivers and community are a part of that ‘WE’. One of our best events is our WE Count Math Family Game Night that inspires a love of mathematics and brings laughter and smiles to our students, families/caregivers, and community.Additionally, our district-wide mathematics department created collective Core Values to help communicate to all of our stakeholders what it means to be a mathematician in our district. NCSM has been a source of inspiration for these core values that we use to guide everything that we do in mathematics.
- Be the Spark: Spark curiosity in others and stay curious yourself.
- Own Your Brilliance: Cultivate a mindset that we each bring value and innovation to our community and our ideas matter.
- Be Bold & Brave: Create and support courageous classroom communities.
Now as the part-time Executive Director of the Delaware Mathematics Coalition, and in my role on the NCSM Board of Directors, I have the opportunity to impact mathematics teaching more broadly. I hope to support bold mathematics leadership and spark joy and curiosity in mathematics across our organization and around the globe!
From Philadelphia to San Diego and New Orleans to Chicago, I have not missed an NCSM conference since my first in Washington, DC in 2009! NCSM has played a huge role in the leader I am today providing access to research and publications, connections with passionate people around the world, and opportunities for professional growth going far beyond what I thought was possible.
Now, in my role as a math supervisor, it is my mission to ensure my coaches, interventionists, administrators, and teacher leaders get an opportunity to experience everything NCSM has to offer! From conferences, webinars, published books and resources, podcasts, book clubs and so much more… there is something for everyone!
In 2017, I was part of a small team that led the start of the Delaware Council of Mathematical Leaders (DCML), the Delaware Mathematics Coalition’s local NCSM affiliate. I was the founding President and still serve on their leadership board, helping to ensure all of our Delaware mathematics educators have access to all that NCSM has to offer.
Now, in this next chapter of my NCSM journey, I am beyond proud to serve on the NCSM Board of Directors! I am honored to have the opportunity to foster and support mathematics leadership and continue to learn and grow together with this phenomenal math community!
