I was fortunate to have experienced mathematics teachers take me under their wing when I began my second career as a mathematics teacher. They were NCTM members and encouraged me to join as well. Becoming a member opened up a wealth of resources and a network of educators that I could learn from, and it greatly impacted my growth as a teacher.
When I transitioned to a role as a mathematics director, I discovered NCSM and quickly became a member. This organization introduced me to a whole new world of resources that supported my development as a mathematics leader. Through their website, publications, and workshops, I gained invaluable knowledge and tools to support both teachers and administrators in my district.
My role on the NCSM Board, first as Second Vice President and now as First Vice President, provided me with a deeper connection to the work of the organization and allowed me to influence the direction of mathematics leadership on a larger scale. It gave me the opportunity to collaborate with other leaders nationwide and contribute to shaping professional development for math leaders at all levels.
Now, as a principal, my involvement in NCSM continues to be a vital resource. The insights and strategies I’ve gained from my time on the Board, coupled with the current resources from the organization, have enhanced my ability to lead my school effectively. The annual conference is a highlight of my year—an opportunity to learn from experts, network with other mathematics leaders from around the world, and gather fresh ideas that I bring back to my school. These connections and shared ideas help me stay informed and continuously improve instruction, leadership, and support for my teachers and students.
