News from the Canada Region
Cheryl Cantin, Canada Regional Director
Summer 2018

Where has the time gone? It feels like it was just yesterday that I was meeting some of you at the Canadian Caucus of the 50th NCSM Annual meeting; and now it’s summer, which here in Montreal is the season of orange construction cones.

Through the summer and fall, I look forward to moving forward on issues that your Provincial Team Leaders have highlighted as important to our Canadian membership. (Incidentally, there are vacant Provincial Team Leader positions for the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Québec, Saskatchewan, and Yukon!) Those issues include integrating First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives authentically in Mathematics education, resources in both our official languages, and implementing a new curriculum on a large scale. If you have any ideas or resources that you would like to share with our community on these or any other issues in mathematics education, please email me at or tweet me at @ETSBMathSci.

In closing here’s what I will be reading this summer:

  • Excellence Through Equity: Five Principles of Courageous Leadership to Guide Achievement for Every Student (Blankstein & Noguera, 2015), and some chapters from
  • Enhancing Classroom Practice with Research behind Principles to Actions (Spangler & Wanko, 2017)

If any of you want to start a conversation about how the ideas in these books relate to our Canadian contexts I would love to exchange ideas via Twitter. Some of you may be used to Marc’s blog, I’m just not there in my "techkyness" yet!

Enjoy your summer and recharge because in a blink of an eye it will be fall.
