NCSM Summer Virtual Event Series

NCSM’s mission is to equip and empower a diverse education community to engage in leadership that supports, sustains, and inspires high quality mathematics teaching and learning every day for each and every learner. In line with that mission, NCSM is offering a transformative Summer Virtual Event Series dedicated to equipping leaders with the tools and strategies they need to grow their practice. Nicora Placa

Nicora Placa
Dr Nicora Placa is an assistant professor at Hunter College in New York City. She teaches and develops high quality clinical experiences for pre-service educators, while also conducting research on professional learning. She was a former NYC elementary and middle school teacher and math coach and she continues to work with schools and districts across the US. Nicora also serves as NCSM’s Coaching Coordinator.

Steven Shadel

Steven Shadel

Dr. Steven Shadel, Chief Knowledge Officer for Math at Great Minds, has 18 years of experience in education as a math teacher, school leader, and district leader. With a doctorate in educational leadership, he champions the potential of public schools. He has led major initiatives in math instruction, including the Great Minds Schools project and K–12 STEM development in Skokie, IL. Steven serves on the NCSM board and formerly chaired ICTM. A lifelong Chicagoan, he enjoys running and playing show tunes with his family. His work centers on empowering students with the language and thinking of mathematicians.

Amy Lucenta

Amy Lucenta
Amy Lucenta, co-founder of Fostering Math Practices, has extensive K-12 mathematics experience with a focus on developing mathematical practices in all students, particularly in historically marginalized students. She supports teachers, districts, and educational collaborative organizations as they transition their curriculum and pedagogy to reflect current mathematics education research through professional development and coaching. A former middle school and high school classroom teacher and elementary math coach, Amy has also worked with pre-service teachers at the Boston Teacher Residency Program. Currently, Amy serves on the NCSM Board as a Regional Director. She is the co-author of Teaching for Thinking: Fostering Mathematical Teaching Practices through Reasoning Routines and Routines for Reasoning: Fostering Mathematical Practices in All Students, published by Heinemann. Judy Dunmire

Judy Dunmire
Judy Carlisle-Dunmire, NCSM Professional Learning Director, is a nationally recognized leader in mathematics education with over 20 years of experience in instructional leadership, professional learning, and curriculum development. She has led statewide initiatives, championed equity, and supported educators through coaching, strategic planning, and professional learning communities. A Past-President of Arkansas math educator organizations, ACTM and AAML, she founded key state leadership networks and contributed to national efforts with UnboundEd, Illustrative Mathematics, and Instruction Partners. Judy holds degrees focused on secondary math education and instructional leadership and is dedicated to systemic change that improves outcomes for underserved students.
