NCSM’s 2022 Board of Directors election is upon us! Voting begins on February 18 and closes on March 15, with the results of the election announced later in the year. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes in developing the ballot and I’d like to acknowledge the work of the team that does this work. Our Nominations Chair, Dr. Shelly Jones, shepherds the process of obtaining and reviewing nominees in order to create a robust slate of candidates from which our members choose their elected board members. Please join me in thanking Dr. Jones for her bold and careful leadership! And while you’re reading, I’d like to fill you in on the extensive process.

Each year in the fall, all NCSM members have the opportunity to nominate qualified candidates for a set of elective board positions, including the Second Vice President and three Regional Directors. For the ballot in an even-numbered year, a President-Elect is chosen. There are many steps in the process and they are defined in our by-laws. Voting instructions will e-mailed to all members in good standing as of January 15, 2022. More information about the election and how to seek help in voting, please see our Elections webpage.

As Pam Seda and Kyndall Brown have said, equity is not a destination, it is a journey. NCSM is committed to and deeply engaged in our own equity journey. Part of that journey includes a commitment to ensure that appointed and elected leadership reflects the diversity of both the field of mathematics education and the NCSM membership. And, like other organizations, we experience successes and failures. We cannot promise that we will always hit the mark because we know that our equity journey is non-linear. But we can promise that we are constantly moving toward our vision where all voices are represented at the table as we boldly lead our colleagues in creating more equitable mathematics teaching and learning experiences for every teacher and every child.
