News from the Southern 1 Region
Bernard E. Frost, Southern 1 Regional Director
When keeping students at the center of education, Diane Sweeney states that strong leaders build partnerships with teacher leaders, understand how to separate teacher leaders from solely evaluation, and position them to be a valued resource within the school community! With such partnerships, come professional learning opportunities.
Meaningful and ongoing professional learning helps us in persevering and leading more effectively. Many excellent opportunities for professional learning were offered in the Southern I Region this past fall. I hope you were able to participate in some of them. I would like to again congratulate the Georgia Council of Teacher of Mathematics on their 60 years of commitment in promoting high quality mathematics education for all students, encouraging an active interest in mathematics and in mathematics education, promoting ongoing professional development for mathematics education, and rewarding excellence in the teaching of mathematics in the state of Georgia. It was a pleasure meeting the NCSM members at the SCCTM Fall conference and I cannot wait to meet more around the region. Please let me know the events, dates, and locations of these opportunities in your state. I can make sure they are posted on the NCSM web site.
There are still more opportunities for professional learning in Southern Region 1 during the Winter/Spring of 2020. Some of them are:
- Florida Association of Mathematics Supervisors (FAMS) Winter Conference January 27-28, 2020 Orlando, Florida (https://fctm.net/county-affiliates/fams/fams-public-page/)
- Georgia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (GCSM) Winter Conference January 29-31, 2020 Jekyll Island Club, Jekyll Island, GA (http://gcsmonline.org/event-3594655)
- Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM) Annual Conference March 13-14, 2020 at Longwood University (www.vctm.org/vctm2020
- North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Central and Western (Asheville, NC) Conference March 28, 2020 (www.ncctm.org)
Please let me know if I can help you in any way as your NCSM Regional Director. Take advantage of the opportunities for professional learning in your state or neighboring states in the spring.
I hope to see some of you March 30th-April 1, 2020 at the 52nd NCSM Annual Conference, Connect. Collaborate. Commit. Moving Mathematics Leadership into the New Decade, in Chicago. Don’t miss this exciting event! Be sure to sign up to volunteer as well. It is a wonderful way to network with colleagues and speakers and feel the energy of a national conference!
