News from the Eastern 1 Region
Shawn Towle, Eastern 1 Regional Director
Greetings to all NCSM members from Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont!
As the 2017-2018 school year wraps up for most of us, our thoughts can turn to energizing and re-charging and thinking about new ideas for the coming school year.
I am looking forward to summer time relaxing with family and friends and some professional learning opportunities where I don’t need to write sub plans. I’m going to kick off my summer reading this year with Visible Learning for Mathematics: What Works Best to Optimize Learning for Students (Hattie, Fisher and Frey, 2017). I live in Maine and our state mathematics organization, ATOMIM (Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Maine) are collaborating with the math specialists at the Maine Department of Education to create professional learning opportunities for teachers, leaders, coaches, and administrators throughout the state.
I’m also excited to have picked up two books at the NCSM conference that are also part of my summer list, Everything you Need for Mathematics Coaching (McGatha, Bay-Williams, Kobett and Wray, 2018) and revisiting an old favorite, now in its second edition, the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions, Second Edition (Smith & Stein, 2018).
NCSM Summer Professional Learning: An opportunity to learn and grow
